NRL Round 9 Breakdown: Left v Right Edge Players

Wicky, NRL Fantasy Scout & Kyle Bedford break down each side’s players by which side of the field they play on. Where do teams favour going to in attack? Where do teams leak most tries?

Whether it’s to decide your NRL Fantasy or NRL Supercoach Captain or to lock in the last leg of your multi – we have you covered!

Knights v Warriors

Sun 5/5, 2pm

Wicky’s breakdown – The Warriors clearly prefer their right side whereas the Knights prefer their left. It’s clear to see with Shaun Johnson being on the right and Ponga usually preferring the left side in attack. However, with no Ponga – the Knights are likely to be more unpredictable. Whereas the Warriors have scored 9 tries through Dallin and Rocco Berry whereas Montoya and RTS have only scored 3 tries when they’ve been on the left side in their normal positions.

Sharks v Dragons
Sun 5/5, 4.05pm

Wicky’s breakdown – The Dragons have scored 63% of their tries through their right side. No surprises here – Ben Hunt is leading the league in try assists in 2024. The Sharks’ numbers show they prefer their left edge – Mulitalo’s been freakishly good at finishing off their attacking raids. But we saw with Trindall missing last week, the impact on the Sharks attack. Katoa scored two on the right wing for the Sharks and Mulitalo went try-less!

Rabbitohs v Panthers

Thu 2/5, 7.50pm

Wicky’s breakdown – Even in a 34 point loss, the Rabbitohs scored 2 tries on Alex Johnston’s left wing through Jacob Gagai! Whether it’s as a Supercoach or Fantasy trade in or to add some extra value to your multi – Gagai definitely seems like he’ll see some action this weekend! Interestingly – the Panthers have conceded 58% of their tries on the right vs 16% on their left. Load up on Jacob Gagai!

For the Panthers – they’re back to (almost) full strength. Garner’s a more than capable replacement for Sorenson who’s still injured. Mavrik Geyer came on for Garner and played out the last 28 minutes of the game, which is likely to happen again this week against the Rabbitohs.

Sea Eagles v Raiders

Fri 3/5, 6pm

Wicky’s breakdown – What’s a nice way to say “they’re screwed”? Whatever it is – that’s how we feel about the Raiders! No Fogarty – Weekes and Strange in the halves and a 40-0 loss to the Sharks. We can’t see things getting much better against Manly, even if they are missing Olakau’atu. That right side for the Raiders looks especially weak – with Weakes and Whitehead (returning from injury) defending together.

Broncos v Roosters

Fri 3/5, 8pm

Wicky’s breakdown – The Broncos have conceded 56% of tries to their left side v only 30% to their right side. With Sam Walker and Joey Manu on the right – we can definitely see where the Roosters may look to attack. Especially with Mam and Cobbo returning from injury.

Bulldogs v West Tigers

Sat 4/5, 3pm

Wicky’s breakdown – Well this breakdown is easy. The Dogs score 46% of their tries on their left (Kikau is close to the top of the Dally M leaderboard!) and concede 67% of their tries through their right side. The left side for the Dogs includes Addo-Carr who scored a hat-trick against the Storm when they almost upset them in Melbourne!

The left side in attack for the Tigers includes boom rookies Galvin and Fainu – with Olam who had scored a couple of tries directly through Galvin earlier in the season.

Titans v Storm

Sat 4/5, 5.30pm

Wicky’s breakdown – The Storm concede noticeably more tries on the right, whereas for the Titans it’s their left edge that’s weaker. Both sides are scoring 50% or more of their tries on their left.

With Foran on the Titans’ left side, with David Fifita – it’s clear to see why. It’ll be interesting to see what the Storm do with Xavier Coates missing due to injury. The matchup of the Titans strong left edge attack v the Storm’s leaky right edge could be great value for try scorer picks. David Fifita could be a huge POD VC option in Supercoach too!

Cowboys v Dolphins

Sat 4/5, 7.35pm

Wicky’s breakdown – The Cowboys have conceded the highest % of tries to middle forwards and the Dolphins have scored tries through Nicholls, Kerr and Plath to name a few through the middle. Their hooker, Marshall-King is great at exposing holes in the opposition defence through the middle of the field.

The Dolphins are still missing 4-5 of their best players – this could be a real opportunity for the Cowboys to get one up on their fellow Queenslanders and lock up a top 8 spot.
